Fanvil Intercoms & Paging (i16S intercom, i504W indoor station, PA2S paging gateway)
Setting up Fanvil SIP intercom and paging gear: registering the i16S wall intercom and i504W touchscreen indoor station to your phone system, and using the PA2S paging gateway to drive overhead speakers and door relays. Includes volume and relay configuration.
Setup steps
- 1Mount and cable each unit: Fanvil intercoms and the PA2S paging gateway connect to your network by Ethernet and can be powered by PoE (recommended) or a local power supply. The i504W indoor station can also join by WiFi, but wire it if a jack is available.
- 2Find each device's address on your network. On the i16S you can make the unit speak its own address: press the call (DSS) button rapidly and it will announce its IP out loud — handy when it's already mounted on a wall.
- 3Browse to the device's address and log in to its web interface. The default username and password are both admin — change the password during setup and record it.
- 4Register each device to your phone system: in the web interface under the Line/Account settings, enter the server address, extension number, and password for that device's extension. The status shows 'Registered' when it works. If Business IT Solutions hosts your phones, we'll provision these for you.
- 5For the i16S intercom, set the call button's destination: the number it dials when pressed — typically reception, a ring group, or the i504W indoor station. Enable auto-answer on the receiving end if you want hands-free intercom behavior.
- 6For the i504W indoor station, walk through its touchscreen setup: connect it to the network, register its extension, and add your door stations/cameras so it can preview video and unlock doors with a tap.
- 7For the PA2S paging gateway, connect your speakers: it has a built-in amplifier for driving paging speakers directly, plus line-level output for feeding an existing amplifier. Match speaker wiring to the amplifier output before powering it — miswired speaker loads can damage equipment; call us at (207) 819-8229 if you're unsure.
- 8Give the PA2S its own extension (register it like the intercoms) so anyone can dial the extension and page the building. If your phone system supports multicast paging zones, the Fanvil gear can join those too.
- 9Set volumes in each device's web interface: announcement/paging volume on the PA2S, ring and talk volume on the intercoms. Test at business hours — a comfortable volume in an empty building is inaudible over lunch rush.
- 10Configure relays if used: the i16S and PA2S have relay outputs that can trigger door strikes, gates, or alarm lights. In the relay settings, set the trigger (DTMF code during a call, or an input event) and the activation duration.
- 11Test everything end to end: press the intercom button, answer from a phone or the indoor station, trigger the relay/door, and make a page — confirm each leg works before closing up walls.
Troubleshooting
Intercom shows unregistered / calls from it fail+
Check the Line status in the device's web interface. If unregistered, re-check the extension password and server address character by character. Reboot the unit after changes. If it registers but calls still fail, the dialed destination may be wrong — confirm the number configured on the call button actually exists on your phone system.
Pages are too quiet / staff can't hear announcements+
Raise the paging/media volume in the PA2S web interface first — it's separate from call volume. If it's maxed and still weak, the amplifier is undersized for the number and type of speakers connected, or speakers are wired inefficiently. Adding speakers in the right places beats turning one speaker up to distortion.
Paging works but there's a loud pop or the first second gets cut off+
Enable the pre-announcement tone (chime) in the paging settings — it gives the amp and listeners a beat before speech starts, so no words are lost. Pops on connect are often an amplifier mute/standby setting; enabling the PA2S's tone or adjusting amp standby usually cures it.
Door or gate relay won't trigger+
Test the relay from the device's web interface first (most Fanvil units have a test/trigger control) — if the lock fires from the web test, wiring is fine and the problem is the trigger settings: confirm the DTMF code and that you're entering it during an active call. If the web test does nothing, it's the relay wiring or lock power — time to get us involved.
i504W touchscreen station drops off WiFi+
Move it to a wired connection if at all possible — a device that unlocks doors shouldn't depend on WiFi. If wireless is the only option, make sure it's on a strong 5 GHz signal from a nearby access point and isn't sitting in a metal enclosure or beside a fridge or panel.
Intercom answers by itself / phones auto-answer when the intercom calls+
That's the auto-answer/intercom feature, and it's configurable. If you don't want hands-free answer, disable auto-answer on the receiving phones or change the intercom's call type to a normal ring. If you do want it for some phones and not others, it's set per device — we can tune this per station.
Pro tips
- PoE everything: one cable for power and network makes intercoms dramatically easier to install and reboot remotely.
- Change the default admin/admin login on every Fanvil device the day it's installed — door and paging hardware should never sit on defaults.
- For overhead paging, several moderate speakers spread out always beats one loud one — intelligibility comes from coverage, not volume.
- The i16S announcing its own IP (rapid-press the call button) is the fastest way to find a wall-mounted unit on the network — no ladder required.
