Grandstream GWN700x Multi-WAN VPN Routers (GWN7001/7002/7003)

Initial setup of a Grandstream GWN700x router: getting online, configuring your internet (WAN) connection, and adopting the router into GWN.Cloud so it manages your Grandstream switches and access points as one system.

Setup steps

  1. 1Connect your internet source (cable modem, fiber ONT) to a WAN port on the router, and connect your computer or switch to a LAN port. Power the router on and give it a couple of minutes to boot.
  2. 2Find the sticker on the bottom of the unit — it has the MAC address and the unit's unique default password. Keep it handy.
  3. 3From a computer on a LAN port, browse to http://192.168.80.1 (the router's default address). Log in with username admin and the password from the sticker.
  4. 4Follow the setup wizard: you'll be required to change the admin password, then configure the WAN connection. Store the new password somewhere safe.
  5. 5Configure the WAN: most cable/fiber connections use DHCP (automatic) and just work. If your provider gave you static IP details, enter the IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS they provided. DSL and some fiber services use PPPoE with a username and password from the provider.
  6. 6Confirm the router is online: the dashboard should show the WAN as up with a public address, and a device on the LAN should be able to browse the web.
  7. 7If you have two internet connections (say, cable plus a backup), connect the second to another WAN port and configure it the same way — the GWN700x supports multiple WANs for failover or load balancing.
  8. 8To manage the router from anywhere, adopt it into GWN.Cloud: sign in at gwn.cloud (or have us add it to your managed account) and add the device using the MAC address and sticker password, or scan the sticker with the GWN app.
  9. 9Once in GWN.Cloud, the router can act as the hub of your Grandstream network — GWN76xx access points and GWN78xx switches show up in the same dashboard for one-screen management.
  10. 10Set up your networks (VLANs) for office, phones, and guests in the router's network settings, then let the router hand out those networks to your switches and APs.
  11. 11Change nothing on port forwarding or firewall rules unless you know exactly what you're exposing — for camera systems, phone systems, or remote access, call Business IT Solutions at (207) 819-8229 and we'll set it up safely.

Troubleshooting

No internet after connecting the new router+

Power-cycle the modem/ONT after connecting a new router — many providers lock onto the first device they see, and a 2-minute power cycle of the modem clears it. Confirm the internet cable is in a WAN port, not a LAN port. Then check the router dashboard: if WAN shows no address, the issue is between the router and the provider.

Can't log into the router at 192.168.80.1+

Make sure your computer is plugged into a LAN port and set to obtain an address automatically. If your old network also used a different address range and your PC has a static address, it won't reach 192.168.80.1. If the password from the sticker doesn't work, the router was configured before — hold the reset button about 10 seconds to factory-reset it, or call us to recover the configuration.

Internet works but is much slower than what I pay for+

Test speed with a computer wired directly into the router to rule out WiFi. Check the WAN port negotiated the right speed (the dashboard shows the link rate — a bad cable can force 100 Mbps on a gigabit line). If a direct-wired test is still slow, run the same test straight off the modem; if it's slow there too, it's a provider issue.

Router won't adopt into GWN.Cloud+

Verify the MAC and password exactly match the sticker, and that the router itself has working internet. A router already assigned to a different GWN.Cloud account has to be released by that account first — this is common with gear bought secondhand. Phones or cameras stopped working after replacing the old router+

The new router's network settings (address ranges, VLANs) probably don't match what the old one handed out. Devices with static addresses from the old range will be stranded. Either recreate the old address ranges on the GWN or update the static devices. This is exactly the kind of cutover we do routinely — worth a call before spending an afternoon on it.

Second internet connection doesn't take over when the first fails+

Both WANs must be configured and shown as up, and failover depends on the router noticing the primary is dead — make sure the WAN health/connection check is enabled so it probes the connection rather than just watching the cable. Test by unplugging the primary WAN cable and confirming traffic moves within a minute.

Pro tips

  • Photograph the bottom sticker before mounting the router — you'll need the MAC and password for cloud adoption later.
  • Keep the modem, router, and switch on a small UPS (battery backup); most 'internet is down' calls after storms are just gear that didn't come back up in the right order.

  • Document your WAN settings (static IPs, PPPoE credentials) on paper in the network closet; provider credentials are the thing nobody can find during an outage.
