Snom Desk Phones & M-Series DECT (D717/D735 desk phones, M400/M430 base + M-series handsets)
Setting up Snom D-series desk phones and M-series cordless DECT systems: getting phones online and registered, pairing cordless handsets to the M400/M430 base, and keeping firmware up to date.
Setup steps
- 1Desk phones (D717/D735): connect the phone's network port to your switch. Snom desk phones are PoE-capable — on a PoE switch they need no power brick; otherwise use the matching Snom power adapter.
- 2Let the phone boot. If Business IT Solutions pre-provisioned it, it pulls its configuration automatically and your extension appears on screen within a few minutes — make a test call and you're done.
- 3For manual setup, find the phone's IP address from the phone's menu (Settings/Information), then browse to that address from a computer on the same network to open the phone's web interface.
- 4In the web interface, configure the first Identity (Snom's term for a line/account): enter the extension/account number, password, and your phone system's server address, then save and confirm the identity registers (status turns green/registered).
- 5Pass-through PC port: if the desk has one network jack, plug the phone into the wall and the computer into the phone's PC port — both share the one drop.
- 6M-series cordless (M400/M430): connect the base station to the network (PoE or adapter) and place it centrally and elevated — the base is the radio, so don't bury it in the network closet.
- 7Charge each cordless handset in its cradle. Cradles need only power, not network.
- 8Register each handset to the base: on the handset, press Menu, go to Connectivity, and choose Register. When asked for the access code, enter 0000 (the default) and confirm. The handset shows its registration when it completes.
- 9Register handsets in the same order as the users/extensions were configured on the base — the base assigns the first registered handset to the first configured user, and so on.
- 10Assign or verify extensions per handset in the base's web interface (browse to the base's IP), where each handset lines up with a user account from your phone system.
- 11Firmware: keep phones current. In the phone's or base's web interface there is a software update section where new firmware is applied — but on provisioned systems, firmware is managed centrally, so check with us before manually updating. If in doubt, call (207) 819-8229.
- 12Test: call between a desk phone and a cordless handset, and confirm transfer and hold behave as expected.
Troubleshooting
Desk phone boots but shows no extension / not registered+
Check the identity status in the phone's web interface — a red/failed identity means the account credentials or server address are wrong, or the network is blocking the phone. Reboot the phone first; if it still won't register and it was working before, the phone system or network changed — call us at (207) 819-8229.
Cordless handset says searching / lost connection to base+
Confirm the base has power and network. If only one handset is affected, re-register it: Menu > Connectivity > Register with access code 0000. If all handsets lost the base, power-cycle the base and they'll reconnect on their own within a minute or two.
Handset registered but gets no calls / wrong extension rings+
M-series maps handsets to users in the order they were registered, so a handset registered out of sequence can land on the wrong extension. In the base's web interface, check which user each handset is bound to and reassign as needed — no need to re-register.
No dial tone on a desk phone but the screen looks normal+
Screens can look normal while the identity has silently dropped. Open the phone's menu or web interface and verify the identity shows registered. Power-cycle the phone (pull the network cable if PoE). If the phone registers but outbound calls fail with a message, note the exact wording — it identifies the problem quickly when you call us.
Cordless range is poor — calls break up away from the office+
Relocate the base higher and more central; walls, coolers, and metal shelving eat DECT signal. Snom M-series supports repeaters for extending coverage into far areas — placed halfway between base and dead zone, not in the dead zone. We can survey and place repeaters if coverage is business-critical.
Phone is on old firmware / a feature we need is missing+
Don't grab firmware from random sites — Snom firmware is specific to model and can brick a phone if mismatched. On our managed systems we push tested firmware remotely. If you self-manage, use the software update section of the phone's own web interface with firmware from Snom's official service portal only.
Pro tips
- Note each phone's MAC address (on the label underneath) before deployment — provisioning and support both key off the MAC.
- PoE + a small UPS on the switch keeps desk phones alive through short power blips — often the difference between 'phones stayed up' and reboot roulette.
- On M-series, registration order matters: register handsets in the same order as the configured users and label each handset with its extension immediately.
- The default handset access code 0000 should be changed on the base if your office is in a shared building — DECT registration is otherwise open to anyone within radio range while the base is in pairing mode.
